Climate summit

Macron plans December climate summit

By SARAH WHEATON

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday announced plans to host a climate conference on the two-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement.

“On December 12, 2017, two years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, France will hold a new summit on climate mobilization,” Macron tweeted.

His announcement came as the G20 summit was wrapping up in Hamburg, Germany. During the two-day gathering, heads of state struggled to deliver a common message on climate change, given U.S. President Donald Trump’s determination to pull out of the deal.

Ultimately, the so-called G19 leaders who support the deal called the climate pledge “irreversible” in a declaration that included a diplomatic carve-out to accommodate the U.S.

Earlier in the day, Macron tweeted that France and China are “united” on defending the Paris deal, adding the hashtag — in English — “#MakeOurPlanetGreatAgain.”
