Isn't always the best

Gingrich: Trump's combative style isn't always the best

By HANNA TRUDO

Newt Gingrich says Donald Trump’s signature “pugnacious” style and “compulsion to counterattack” isn’t always the best tactic to employ as president.

In an interview Sunday on ABC's “This Week,” the former House speaker from Georgia and staunch Trump supporter commented on a recent presidential tweet that drew instant attention when it appeared to confirm that the president is under investigation.

“I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt," Trump tweeted without clarification.

“I don't think it serves him well," Gingrich said. "I don't think that tweet helped him.”

He also went on to call the Russian controversy that has dominated much of Trump’s new presidency “baloney,” brushing off any attempts to legitimize the FBI’s investigation into Russian meddling in last year's presidential campaign.

“He is infuriated, and legitimately, in my judgment, by this whole Russian baloney,” Gingrich said of the president.
