Capitol Hill visit

Trump plans Capitol Hill visit

Sources say he may meet with members of Republican leadership.

Donald Trump might be coming to Capitol Hill as soon as next week to begin wooing Republican members of Congress.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions' operation is trying to broker meetings between Trump and Republican factions according to multiple sources familiar with the plans. Trump may even meet with members of Republican leadership, according to the sources.

The outreach, which is in its initial stage, is a sign that Trump knows he has work to do in Washington now that he is the presumptive nominee.

Many top Republicans — from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — have said they will support the GOP nominee regardless of who it is. But Ryan and McConnell have expressed vehement opposition to major planks of Trump's candidacy, including his proposal to bar Muslims from the U.S.

But since Trump became the party's presumptive nominee, he's garnered the endorsements of several veteran lawmakers, including Reps. Candice Miller of Michigan and Tom Rooney of Florida, who was co-chairman of Marco Rubio's Florida campaign until he dropped out of the presidential race.

A spokeswoman for Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This meeting would mark Trump’s second private meeting with congressional Republicans during his presidential bid. He met with a handful of GOP lawmakers at the law firm Jones Day, just steps from Capitol Hill, in March. Also, Trump headlined an anti-Iran deal rally with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) at the Capitol in September.
