What' the plan??? There isn't one........

US strikes mark a stunning demonstration of military might and presidential power

Analysis from CNN's Stephen Collinson

President Donald Trump’s attack on Iran’s nuclear sites is both a stunning demonstration of US military might and unilateral presidential power.

Other presidents chose not to take this step, in the belief that such action could ignite a full-on war with Iran. But the Middle East has changed — Israel has dismantled many of the Iranian proxies that it would have used to fight back.

By attacking Iran’s known nuclear sites, the president has attempted to fully eradicate Tehran’s nuclear program for good.

Theses are the big questions now:

  • How will Iran respond? Does it have the will and the remaining capacity to attack US bases and interests, or even US civilians, in the Middle East or elsewhere?
  • How successful were the strikes — especially those at the subterranean Fordow site? Will the US need to go back with more bombing raids that could make a prolonged war more likely?
  • How will Trump’s gamble play out politically? He ignited a new conflict without seeking approval from Congress, after ignoring US allies or preparing the American people.
  • What will the political impact be in Iran? The attacks are a shattering blow to Iran’s clerical leaders. Could the attacks unleash forces that could trigger a toppling of the revolutionary regime or even a splintering of the country that could send shockwaves throughout the region?
