Trump backs GOP's Balderson with Ohio special election underway

By STEPHANIE MURRAY

President Donald Trump reiterated his endorsement on Tuesday for Ohio Congressional candidate Troy Balderson, pushing voters to the polls in a closely contested special election seen by many as a bellwether for November's midterm elections.

The president spoke at a Balderson rally last weekend in Lewis Center, Ohio, and on Tuesday sought to tie Balderson's opponent, Danny O'Connor, to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

“Ohio, vote today for Troy Balderson for Congress. His opponent, controlled by Nancy Pelosi, is weak on Crime, the Border, Military, Vets, your 2nd Amendment - and will end your Tax Cuts. Troy will be a great Congressman. #MAGA,” Trump said in a tweet.

Despite the president's endorsement of Balderson, recent polls have showed O’Connor, the Democrat, surging in a Congressional district where Trump won comfortably in 2016. Republicans have spent heavily in the Trump-friendly district in an effort to maintain control of the seat.

In Ohio, Trump issued one of his trademark nicknames to 31-year-old Democrat, dubbing O’Connor “Danny boy.” Vice President Mike Pence also campaigned for Balderson last week, and Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, has recorded a robocall on his behalf.
