Convicted spy Jonathan Pollard released from prison

By Nick Gass

(Pollard is a criminal and should be treated as such, he never should have been let out. This is a disgrace to justice. Pollard stole and turned over thousands of highly classified documents that related to US National Security and policy to the Israelis for money. He did it for the money, not anything else. He is a low-life criminal that damaged US Security for money. Period.)

Jonathan Pollard, a U.S. naval intelligence analyst convicted of spying on the United States for Israel, was released Friday after serving nearly 30 years in federal prison, according to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a statement reported by The Associated Press, the Israeli prime minister said that "the people of Israel welcome the release of Jonathan Pollard. After three long and difficult decades, Jonathan has been reunited with his family. May this Sabbath bring him much joy and peace."

Pollard had been imprisoned in a medium-security facility in Butner, North Carolina, since 1987. He had been arrested in 1985 after he tried to enter the Israeli Embassy in Washington to seek asylum. After his conviction, he received a life sentence.

After confirmation in July that Pollard would be released later this year, the Justice Department said in a statement, that it has “always maintained that Jonathan Pollard should serve his full sentence for the serious crimes he committed, which in this case is a 30-year sentence, as mandated by statute, ending Nov. 21, 2015."

Probation restrictions bar Pollard from leaving the U.S. for five years, but he has previously said he wants to relocate to Israel.

His lawyers have said he intends to live and work in the New York area.
